Prepare for the Trail
Preparation Creates More Room to Be Present.
A safe, meaningful walk begins before arriving at the trailhead. Review the event details, conditions, equipment, health considerations, and waiver requirements before every gathering.
Before every walk
Know the trail and know your limits.
Read the posted distance, elevation gain, difficulty, terrain, expected duration, meeting location, and group pace. Choose a walk that fits your current ability—not the pace you feel pressured to prove.
If a health, mobility, medication, or accessibility concern may affect your experience, consult an appropriate professional when needed and privately notify the walk leader before departure.
Weather and conditions
Desert conditions can change the decision to walk.
Check the current forecast and official trail notices shortly before leaving. Heat, wind, lightning, flash-flood risk, snow, ice, wildfire, and trail closures may require a route change, delayed start, or cancellation.
Never rely on an older event description as a current conditions report. Follow the most recent organizer notice and instructions from land-management authorities.
Packing list
Bring what supports safety, comfort, and attention.
Water & fuel
Carry enough water for the route and conditions, plus electrolytes or snacks when appropriate.
Footwear & layers
Wear trail-appropriate shoes and clothing that can adapt to temperature and wind.
Sun protection
Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a brimmed hat—especially for exposed desert routes.
Personal essentials
Bring required medication, identification, a charged phone, and any personal support item you may need.
Reflection tools
A journal or Field Guide is welcome, but never required.
Leave No Trace
Carry out everything you bring and protect the land that holds the gathering.
Safety and waiver
Complete the practical steps before arrival.
Every participant must review the safety guidance and complete the required waiver. A waiver acknowledges the inherent risks of outdoor activity; it does not replace preparation, sound judgment, or following leader instructions.
